A spiritual genius of commanding insight, intellect, and power, Swami Vivekananda crammed immense labor and achievement into his short life, from 1863 to 1902. A disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, widely regarded as one of India's greatest spiritual teachers, Vivekananda renounced the world and crisscrossed India as a wandering monk, then came to Chicago's Parliament of Religions in 1893 to represent Hinduism. He taught Vedanta widely in India, America, and Europe, inspiriing thousands of students with the twin ideals of self-realization and selfless service.
"It was inspiring to see the Swami as he dictated to me the contents of the work. In delivering his commentaries on the sutras or aphorisms, he would leave me waiting as he entered deep stats of meditation of self-contemplation to emerge from there with some lumnious interpretation. I had always to keep the pen dipped in ink. He might be absorbed for long periods of time and then suddenyl his silence would be broken by some eager expression or some long, deliberate teahing."
Sarah Ellen Waldo, 1895
