Unique Challenges with Adolescent Brain Development
The latest book by renowned neuropsychiatrist Dan Siegel outlines the unique challenges of adolescent brain development. "Brainstorm" explores the science behind changes in a teenager's brain and how this impacts behavior and relationships. As we know, our inner experiences often impact our external environment.
These challenges are exacerbated by psychological trauma from adversity in childhood, as well as socio-economic opportunity gaps. This is especially true for youth of color, who are at disproportionately higher risk of school failure and juvenile justice involvement. The Presidential initiative "My Brother's Keeper," is focused on disparities in education, employment, and exposure to the justice system especially among youth of color. With millions of youth of color struggling to succeed, we have a moral, as well as a financial, imperative to help ALL our youth reach their full potential.
