A Message of Solidarity from Niroga

"Doers of wrong and watchers of wrongdoing are both equally culpable." - Tagore

Niroga strives to uphold the tenets of Empathy, Equity and Empowerment. Across the nation and the world, hundreds of thousands of people are protesting how communities of color are routinely denied these very things. Black and brown bodies do not only suffer disproportionate, unjust violence at the hands of police officers, they are also more severely impacted by the health risk that the pandemic poses, and its economic implications as well.

We cannot stay silent when the lives of members of our community - the children and adults our programs serve - are at stake. We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement, and their statement that "In affirming that Black Lives Matter, we need not qualify our position. To love and desire freedom and justice for [Black communities] is a prerequisite for wanting the same for others."

Standing in solidarity with those who are asking to be heard, Niroga is currently doing three things:

  • Bringing brief Dynamic Mindfulness practices to children and youth of color, and their adult allies - providing accessible tools for healing trauma and enhancing stress resilience for those who are historically most affected by structural and intergenerational trauma. This has up-stream implications for de-escalation, provides alternatives to detention/suspension, and helps dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline that disproportionately affects many of those we serve.
  • Providing Dynamic Mindfulness training to build empathy and emotion regulation for people in positions of power and privilege, including contexts of law enforcement, courts and correctional facilities. This helps navigate difficult conversations, from a common foundation of trust and desire to understand, rather than to be understood.
  • Presenting Dynamic Mindfulness to influencers and thought leaders, as socially relevant and culturally congruent tools/skills for manufacturing empathy, the key to creating 'beloved community' and a more just and peaceful world.

Niroga's programs can play a role in offering tools to notice and change the ways we move and breathe, in turn impacting the ways we feel and think. We will continue striving for our own learning and growth, so that we may support this process in others.

Sincerely,
the Niroga Team
